Yes, the VOSONIC MMV VP6300 does look like an iPod.
Disturbingly so, you might say. To be a clone, however, it would only
have to match the iPod's abilities. This 20GB MP3 player has so many features
and is such great value for money that, despite its appearance, it deserves
to be compared to something better than the aging and now ubiquitous Apple
iPod.
The basics first: it is a 20GB hard drive based MP3/WMA player and storage
device that will connect to most computers via USB 2.0/1.1 without need
for drivers. As well as music, any type of data file can be stored on
it, and it is especially suited to storing photos, as you will see.
So far, so standard...
VOSONIC MMV VP6300 Info |
- Colour screen
- Reads most memory cards without an adapter
- Play MPEG-1 and Motion JPEG videos
- 20GB of mass storage
- View / Rotate / Zoom photos (up to 16 MP)
- Play MP3 or WMA Music tracks with Equaliser functionality
| The VOSONIC MMV VP6300 has a 2 inch colour
screen. This means you can view any image files stored on it, images you
have perhaps transferred straight from your digital camera's memory card.
Yes, the MMV can read all current memory cards used with digital cameras:
CompactFlash, IBM Microdrive, SmartMedia, Memory Stick (Sony & LexarMedia),
Memory Stick Pro, Secure Digital, MultiMediaCard, and xD picture cards.
No Adapter is required except for Memory Stick Duo and RS-MMC cards.
The iPod photo certainly can't do this! It's not quite as good as the
iRiver H340 that can act as a USB hub and connect directly to suitable
cameras, but it's still top-notch.
This is a great feature for digital photographers; instead of buying
lots of memory cards just transfer images from the full card onto the
MMV. Vosonic claim a full 1GB card takes 7 to 8 minutes to download. JPEG
photos up to 16 Megapixels can be displayed and run in a slideshow, rotated
by 90 degrees, and Zoomed in/out. Their Exif information can also be viewed.
The VOSONIC MMV VP6300 plays video too!
You can play MPEG-1 and Motion JPEG videos either on its screen or connect
to a TV via the TV out and Video composite cable. You will have to obtain
the Mpegs from elsewhere though (such as via your computer, or the internet)
as it cannot record from source.
Battery News
The MMV has a built-in rechargeable Lithium-ion battery which allows 3 hours of
usage on full charge when the LCD is on or up to 6 hours with the LCD on
standby mode (e.g. whilst listening to music). These figures are a bit below
the industry norm. We have a dislike of built-in batteries as it makes replacing
them a hassle. Still, the iPod is the same and unless you intend using the
device for long periods in a wilderness devoid of wall sockets it shouldn't
be too much of a problem.
Conclusion
The VOSONIC MMV VP6300 is certainly a feature packed device, being an
MP3/WMA player, 20GB portable hard drive, memory card reader (almost all
standard types) and basic MPEG Video player all-in-one. Its similarity
to an iPod is purely cosmetic: it has a lot more features and capabilities
for your money; even than the latest, rather pricey, iPod Photo. Unless
you are a digital photographer you may not get the most from its versatile
memory card reading features, and if you just want to play music, there
are better options. Most people, however, will find its many capabilities
useful at some time, and for a 20GB MP3/WMA player and storage device
with a colour screen it represents excellent value for money. The styling
is pretty good too. ;-)
